Safety Is a Top Concern When Boating

There are several concerns when boating in the waterways surrounding Manhattan Island. The currents in these rivers are not typical of other rivers, as they are influenced by the tides. Commercial traffic in the area is very heavy, and navigating around these ships can be troubling for even the most seasoned captains. Before you set out on your adventure, be sure to always check weather conditions, NOAA boating charts, caution areas (like ferry routes and commercial vessel channels), and no wake zones.

Security on the New York / New Jersey Waters

Another concern for those who take to these New York and New Jersey waters is security. The US Coast Guard and the NY Harbor Police, as well as other security agencies, are always patrolling the area. It's important for boaters to be aware of areas where they are not allowed and where they should give right-of-way.
